Taking steps for those who can’t - Toronto – September 25, 2006
Toronto – September 25, 2006: On Saturday, September 30, GTA residents will take to the streets and pathways to raise funds for ALS.This year, more than 10,000 individuals across Canada will participate in the WALK for ALS. The Walk is a nation-wide event (with 77 communities across Canada participating) to raise funds for ALS research and services to support those living with this fatal disease. This year’s fundraising goal is $1.8 million.
ALS Society of Ontario’s GTA regional manager Helen Taylor says, “This event creates the opportunity to increase public awareness about ALS and to raise funds to support local services for those living with ALS, their families and caregivers. With your help, people living with this devastating disease will receive one of the most important gifts we can give them, hope.”
Recording industry executive and popular Canadian Idol judge Zack Werner is the national chair and spokesperson for the WALK for ALS. Werner says, “I am very proud to be a part of this amazing event and to be involved in helping to find a cure for this devastating disease. I have seen first-hand what ALS does to a person – my father died of ALS in 1997.”
Six Walks are taking place in the GTA on September 30 at 10 a.m.:
• Brampton Walk will take place at Jim Archdekin Park
• Etobicoke Walk will take place at Humber Bay Park East
• North York Walk will take place at Sunnybrook Park
• Rexdale Walk will take place at Rowntree Mills Park
• Oakville Walk will take place at Coronation Park
• Newmarket Walk will take place at Fairy Lake Park
ALS, more commonly know as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degeneration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating, and even smiling almost impossible. Three thousand Canadians are living with ALS and every day two to three die of this disease.
