Bertrand Receives Volunteer Award
TORONTO—Marcel Bertrand has received the Myra Rosenfeld Volunteer Award from the ALS Society of Canada. The award was presented to Bertrand at a ceremony held in Toronto on Saturday, May 6.“Mr. Bertrand embodies the definition of a true and committed volunteer,” says Christina Clark, Brummitt-Feasby ALS House manager. “In the past six years he has been an advocate for the individual with ALS, and the growing ALS community. He is a political activist, motivational speaker, insightful supporter and notably, a leader.”
Bertrand became project manager in charge of renovations of the Brummitt-Feasby ALS house. Through his involvement with the construction industry, he was able to secure donations of materials and labour. The house is a model of palliative care, and the first of its kind in North America. In 2005, the house won the Winnipeg Accessibility award.
ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degeneration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible. Ninety per cent of those who get ALS will die within two to five years. Up to 10 per cent can live 10 years or more. ALS is not considered a rare disease. Approximately 3,000 Canadians currently live with ALS. And, two to three Canadians die of ALS each day.
The Myra Rosenfeld Volunteer Award recognizes exemplary volunteer leadership. It is awarded for outstanding contribution to the advancement of the mission and goals of the ALS Society of Canada by a volunteer at the national/unit/chapter level. The award honours Myra Rosenfeld, a dedicated volunteer who died of ALS in 1990.
