Gardner Receives Leadership Award

TORONTO—Michael Gardner has received the William Fraser Leadership Development Award from the ALS Society of Canada. Gardner was recognized for his work at ALS B.C. during an awards ceremony on Saturday, May 6.

“Gardner has made a unique contribution in many ways to the ALS community in both B.C. and nationally,” says Menno Froese, unit director of ALS Society of B.C. “His generous contribution of both skill and time have assisted the ALS community both in our province and nationally.”

Gardner provided much needed guidance for the B.C. chapter, clarified and resolved outstanding issues. He presented a meticulously prepared business plan and re-established a solid footing for the ALS Society of B.C.

ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degeneration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible. Ninety per cent of those who get ALS will die within two to five years. Up to 10 per cent can live 10 years or more. ALS is not considered a rare disease. Approximately 3,000 Canadians currently live with ALS. And, two to three Canadians die of ALS each day.

The William Fraser Leadership Development Award recognizes outstanding leadership development initiated and implemented by an individual, chapter or unit. The award honours William Fraser, a past president of ALS Society of Canada who died in 2000.
