Stotts and Huras receive Exceptional Fundraising Award
TORONTO, May 12, 2008 – Calgary residents Gerry Stotts and Dan Huras received the Exceptional Fundraising Award (Group) from the ALS Society of Canada during an awards ceremony on May 3rd in Toronto.“The ALS Society of Alberta owes a great deal to the vision, generosity and dedication of all those on the Charitee Golf Tournament Committee. Without their support, individuals in Alberta living with ALS would not have the free and easy access to the equipment that makes such a difference in their day-to-day activities,” says Karen Caughey, executive director, ALS Society of Alberta.
Since its inception, the golf tournament has raised more than $700,000 for the ALS Society of Alberta’s equipment fund. Stotts and Huras, along with the Charitee Golf Tournament Committee, currently organize and run the annual golf tournament in Calgary.
The first tournament was held in 1998 and was named The Evelyn Bell Tee Off for ALS Awareness, after Evelyn Bell, a relative of Stott’s wife, Sally. Bell had ALS and after her passing in 1999, the tournament was renamed the Evelyn Bell Memorial Golf Tournament, and each year, continues to raise $100,000 for the Society.
ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease that causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible. Eighty per cent of those diagnosed will die within two to five years.
The Exceptional Fundraising Program Award recognizes a team that has demonstrated excellence in fundraising programs implemented during 2007. An exceptional program develops an innovative idea and attains or exceeds a fundraising goal.
The ALS Society of Canada, founded in 1977, is the only national voluntary health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS and support for those living with ALS. The Society funds research towards a cure for ALS, supports our provincial partners in the provision of quality care for those living with ALS, and provides information to build awareness about the disease. The vision of the ALS Society of Canada is to find a cure for ALS.
