ALS Society of Canada welcomes $15-million funding promise
Response to Conservative’s announcement on funding for major study on neurological diseasesThe ALS Society of Canada welcomes the Conservative Party of Canada’s October 9th announcement that they will work with major Canadian health charities and commit $15 million for a four-year study of Canadians affected by neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive fatal disease that has no effective treatment or cure. ALS is the most common cause of neurological death in Canada, and approximately 2,500 - 3,000 Canadians over the age of 18 currently live with this incurable disease. Research is the only hope for people with ALS.
“We are pleased with the Conservative Party’s commitment to improving the health of Canadians through this new research funding,” says David Cameron, President and CEO of ALS Society of Canada. “With the Conservative government re-elected, we look forward to working with the government and other neurological charities to better understand the needs of Canadians affected by neurological diseases.”
The ALS Society of Canada is a founding member of the Neurological Health Charities Canada (NHCC), a collective of organizations that represent people with chronic, often progressive, brain diseases, disorders and injuries in Canada. NHCC’s role is to provide leadership, evaluating and advancing new opportunities for collaboration specific to advocacy, education and research projects, related to brain health.
Founded in 1977, the ALS Society of Canada is the only national voluntary health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS and support for those with ALS. The ALS Society of Canada funds research towards a cure for ALS and supports our provincial partners in the provision of quality care for those living with ALS. Our vision is to find a cure for this devastating disease.
