FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DECEMBER 10, 2008:Wilma Turner from British Columbia who participated in the West Koootenay Walk on June 1, 2008 is the winner of the Top Team Fundraiser prize for the 2008 WALK for ALS. Each person who was a member of a Walk Team, received one prize entry for every $250 the individual raised. The top team fundraiser prize was a $3,000 travel voucher towards a vacation of the winners choice.
Turner who was eligible for five entries was picked out of 2,810 entries in a random draw held at the annual ALS Fall Board Meeting in Toronto at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel on October 25, 2008 by ALS Society of Canada Volunteer Chair, Ben Wendland from British Columbia.
Wendland said "A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year's WALK for ALS and those who contributed to make this year's Walk a great success. We are looking forward to another successful WALK for ALS in 2009!
The WALK for ALS occurs across the country each year in more than 77 communities. Each Walk is organized by local volunteers. In 2008 the Walk generated more than $2.2 million, with support from more than 16,000 walkers and another 155,000 pledging those walkers.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, is a devastating neuromuscular disease. ALS is sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease after the legendary New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig who lost his battle with ALS at age 38. Death typically occurs from respiratory failure within two to five years of diagnosis. There is no known cause for ALS, and to date, no known cure. Research is our only hope. ALS Canada funds research towards a cure for ALS and supports Provincial ALS Societies in their provision of quality care for persons living with ALS.
