Grants for funding one-two year proposals with “high risk potential high impact” are offered through the Bernice Ramsay Discovery Grants program. Two years ago, ALS Canada received so many of these application that we funded two additional discovery grants on an ad hoc basis. The goal of this program is to fund the development of novel methodology directly applicable to ALS, or to attract investigators from related fields who bring new expertise to ALS research.
These grants are wonderful naming opportunities for any sponsor who is interested in potential breakthrough advances. Any project which looks promising could be supported by a small BioTech for further development along the drug discovery pathway. Among our Discovery Grant fundees there are projects for preclinical testing of muscle stimulation (Kelvin Jones) and of distal stem cell transplantation (Victor Rafuse) in maintaining function; and novel minimally invasive (Yana Yunusova) and non-invasive (Doug Munoz) protocols for diagnostics in ALS patient populations.
