When you are living with or caring for someone with ALS, there are countless challenges and changes to consider. Through donor support, ALS Canada helps people and families in Ontario to navigate the options available through the healthcare system and tries to fill the gaps in whatever ways we are able. We know that the need is great – which is why we are excited to share some of the ways we hope to better meet your needs.

Last year, more than 300 of you – including people living with ALS, as well as current and past caregivers – responded to our survey requesting feedback about the services we provide. Because the survey was anonymous, we are not able to report back directly to everyone who contributed, but we want you to know how grateful we are for your participation. It was rewarding to hear your positive comments, and helpful to hear constructive feedback about ways we could improve.

We learned that overall, you highly value the work that ALS Canada does as an organization, and that you value the service and support you receive from ALS Canada’s Regional Managers, who live and work in different communities across the province providing home visits, support groups and regular outreach to people and families living with ALS. In 2016, ALS Canada Regional Managers collectively provided support to more than 850 people across Ontario.

However, survey respondents also expressed a desire for more frequent interactions with these Regional Managers who offer invaluable support. In addition, you said that support groups are a useful way to share experiences, receive practical advice and emotional support – but these groups are only available in select communities so many clients and families don’t have access to them. Finally, the timeliness and quality of the equipment offered through our equipment loan program could also be improved.

Reflecting on the input of our community, we have carefully considered how we might be able to address these areas and offer more value in our services. We have updated the following:

To our donors, who make it possible for us to offer community-based services and support, your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Within Ontario, ALS Canada has a role similar to that of the provincial ALS societies providing services and support to help meet the needs of people living with ALS.
